John 11:17-44 recounts the story of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead, demonstrating his power over death and revealing himself as the resurrection and the life.  The passage highlights Jesus’s compassion, his divine authority, and the significance of faith in  him.  It also emphasizes that physical death is not the ultimate end for believers, who will be resurrected to eternal life.
 
The passage shows that Jesus’s tears are not just for Lazarus, but also for the pain and suffering of those around him, including Mary, Martha and the others mourning.  It highlights his ability to empathize with human emotion and suffering.
